Shortly after the overseas press conference, Huawei held a new product launch conference in China, bringing the world-famous Huawei Mate 20 series products to the domestic market. After experiencing the Huawei Mate 20 X for a while, we found that it has nine highlights. So it’s incomprehensible how other flagships will compete with it. Huawei has two major events annually - the P series are refreshed in the spring, and the Mate lineup - in the fall. And with the way the P20 lineup shook up the premium market earlier this year, we had every reason to be excited about the Mate 20 lineup.
The new Mate 20 and 20 Pro duo not only packs the first 7nm Android chipset - the cutting-edge Kirin 980 chip with a brand new NPU, but it also revamps the iconic Leica camera. And the maker didn't stop there. There are some notable improvements such as the new selfie camera, 3D Face Unlock, 40W charging, and wireless charging that works both ways.
Just like last year with the Mate 10 series, Huawei will be releasing Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro with different screens. The Mate 20 has an IPS LCD with a tiny notch and an unorthodox RGBW matrix. The Mate 20 Pro comes with an OLED screen with a larger cutout that houses the sensors needed for its advanced 3D Face unlock.
Both Mates run on the new Kirin 980 and pack the new Leica Triple Camera, which has lost the monochrome sensor in favor of a 20MP camera with ultra-wide lens. The camera exterior has been completely revamped as well - it's now a square centered at the back of the Mates.
Let’s talk about the Mate 20 X display, its gigantic display. Technically speaking, it’s as good as every other smartphone display on the market – it’s an OLED, HDR panel that targets the DCI-P3 colour space. That’s certainly nothing new, of course, and it looks nice and bright on first impressions.
What’s primed to get futurists hot under the collar, though, is the size of that display. Measuring 7.2in from slightly rounded corner to slightly rounded corner, the Mate 20 X’s screen is a massive 12% larger than the Mate 20 Pro’s and, err, almost twice the size of the iPhone SE’s display, with four times the area
Even with those, frankly rather shocking, figures it’s difficult to convey just how massive this phone is. It’s certainly a good deal larger than any other phone I’ve picked up recently, and I expect you’ll have to wear custom-made jeans with deep pockets to carry one around with you when it launches.
Back to the rest of the phone, though, and the Mate 20 X is fitted with the same triple-camera arrangement as the Mate 20 Pro. The primary camera unit is a high-resolution, 40-megapixel lens with a bright aperture of f/1.8. That sits next to the 8-megapixel, f/2.2 aperture 3x telephoto lens, which is flanked by a wide-angle, 20-megapixel f/2.2 camera.
Huawei’s Mate 20 X looks identical to the Mate 20 Pro, aside from one crucial difference: it's huge. How much larger, though? Well, the screen itself is 12% bigger – which necessitates a considerable size increase, despite the bezel-less screen. Notch haters rejoice: there’s no chunky horizontal bezel eating its way into the top of the screen, rather there’s a dinky little drop notch, which contains the front-facing camera.
The rear of the Mate 20 X is particularly special, too. Again, like the Pro, this phone is coated in a glass panel, with vinyl-like ridges. Not only does it look good, but it serves a practical purpose, too: it’s nice and grippy and doesn’t pick up fingerprints as often as its similarly glass-coated rivals. This fancy finish is available with both midnight blue and phantom silver color schemes.
It won't be to everybody's taste, but the Mate 20 X is looking very promising indeed for those who don't want to compromise on screen space. Whether you need this much is another matter entirely, but with the same specifications as the Mate 20 Pro, it looks like you'll be getting something very special either way – especially if you're a keen photographer.
The Huawei Mate 20 X also has a graphene liquid-cooled cooling system. Actually, it incorporates a combination of graphene material + VC liquid cold plate into the phone, which can quickly conduct heat and run for a long time.
Through the comparison of the Huawei Mate 20 X normal focal length and wide-angle photos, it can be found that the super wide-angle lens of the phone is quite shocking. It is worth noting that the Huawei Mate 20 X also supports triple optical zoom and five times hybrid zoom, which can be used to capture the beauty that is invisible to the naked eye.
Due to the use of a too large screen, the first consideration for Huawei Mate 20 X is the interaction of software. Specifically, the Huawei Mate 20 X abandoned the traditional Android three capacitive buttons, and instead, used gesture sliding interaction – swipe up from the bottom of the screen to go directly back to the home page, slide up and pause to call out multitasking, swipe from the left and right borders in to return.
The Huawei Mate 20 X is equipped with a 5000mAh battery. We conducted a five-hour heavy battery life test. As you can see, after it, the phone still remains 58% of power. This battery life is enough to make the Huawei Mate 20 X stand out in the phone camp. Another hidden danger of the big battery is that it is slow to charge.
Fortunately, the Huawei Mate 20 X supports 4.5V/5A (22.5W) Super Charge. In 30 minutes, it charges up to 49%. In other words, the phone fully charges a 2500mAh battery in half an hour. Just saying, the iPhone XS battery capacity is 2658mAh.
The Huawei Mate 20 X did not expand the screen arbitrarily. Instead, on the basis of hardware and software synergy, the Huawei Mate 20 X’s large screen has gained a revolutionary experience. In this sense, it’s quite a new model in the smartphone market.
If you are looking for an entertainment hub that is sufficiently worry-free and powerful enough, there is no doubt that the Huawei Mate 20 X is your best choice.
